BRUSSELS- Member of the European Parliament Tokia Saifi affirmed the urgency for the European Union (EU) to strengthen its partnership with Algeria, a “key player of the region,” to deal with the common challenges of migration and terrorist threat.
In an article entitled “EU-Algeria: Strengthening of relations can bring stability and security,” published in the online magazine “The Parliament,” the French Euro-MP underlined that “Algeria is one of the regions’ key players,” calling for “the urgent need to strengthen EU-Algeria partnership” insofar as the two sides are facing “the same challenges, including the issue of migration and the management of terrorist risks.”
Dubbing “worrying” the situation in the Mediterranean region with the increase in the number of conflicts and the growing terrorist threat, Tokia Saifi said that “EU should reaffirm its support to Algeria, which plays a key role in the negotiations aimed at reaching a resolution to the Libyan and Malian crises.”
“By strengthening EU’s relations with Algeria, a major military power in North Africa, we can achieve lasting political solutions, able to bring stability and security,” she added.
While broaching the revised European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) and the negotiations for the adoption of action plan with Algeria, the Euro-MP said that it represents “a real opportunity, not only to consolidate the relations with Algeria, but also to intensify them.”
