ALGIERS- The Revision of the Constitution opened, for Algeria, “a new era” for the deepening of democracy and the strengthening of social action said Wednesday, in Algiers, the Secretary General of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA), Abdelmajid Sidi-Said.
This revision of the constitution “is a real update of the social contract that projects our country into a new era of deepening of our democratic practice and the strengthening of social action,” said Sidi Said in a speech given on the occasion of the celebration of the double anniversary of creation of the UGTA and the nationalization of hydrocarbons whose official celebrations took place at the Palace of Nations (Club des Pins).
He added that the amendments to the Constitution will contribute in “consolidating national unity, strengthening the rule of law and give full dimension to a society rooted in its values and strained towards progress.”
“Beyond the remarkable progress that we have made, we take into account what must be done in the years to come,” he said, adding that it is in this perspective that the revision of the Constitution aimed at “adapting the fundamental law to the evolution of our society.”
In this regard, the economic and financial world events “remind us, rightly, of the decision taken by the President of the Republic to pay off foreign debt and of which we now realize the importance and impact,” he said, dubbing this decision “salutary.”
In this regard, the UGTA Secretary General highlighted “the collective obligation to synergize the driving and unifying force which values work, accelerates the industrial conquest and gives fullness to national production.”
“We need to focus more on the strengthening of a united Algeria, animated by values of equity and social justice,” said Sidi Said.
