ALGIERS- Algeria is eager to see the formation of a Libyan government, which should be based in Tripoli to ensure the settlement of the crisis, Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel.“We all agree and eager to see this government formed and based in Tripoli, given the difficult missions awaiting it, including the implementation of the United Nations agreement (signed on 17 December 2015), the drafting of a Constitution and its adoption by the Libyan people as well as the elections,” Messahel told the press.
Speaking at the end of his discussions with UN Secretary General’s special Representative for Libya Martin Kobler, Messahel said that Algeria’s position is in line with that of the UN.
“We have always supported a political process for the resolution of the Libyan crisis,” he added.
“We have always called for an inter-Libyan dialogue for the preservation of the unity and cohesion of the Libyan people and their sovereignty,” said Messahel, adding that his discussions with Kobler is part of the permanent consultations between the UN and Algeria on Libyan crisis.
As regards the political agreement signed on 17 December 2015, Messahel said that it was “an extremely important step, and we have always called for the formation of a national unity government, which should be based in the capital Tripoli.”
Messahel underlined the need that the process, which has been launched recently, would lead to the formation of the new government, which should be representative and with large prerogatives.”
He also stressed the urgent need to see this government formed and based in Tripoli, because the weakness of a country and its institutions facilitates the spread of terrorism, he explained.
International and regional organizations unanimously support the agreement on 17 December 2015 and the formation of a government, said Messahel, citing the UN, the European union, the African Union and the Arab League.
